They may mask, but won't necessarily hide your location. About the only good reason to use a VPN for general internet use is if you don't trust your internet provider — which can log a lot of data about your internet usage — or if you don't want your data captured by Australia's mandatory data retention scheme. But the problem is fundamentally one of trust. If you're using a VPN because you don't trust your internet provider, you need to be sure you can trust your VPN provider, who would have access to all the same data about your online activity.

It's likely impossible to verify claims about what data they do or don't log, or what they do with your data. And a VPN won't protect against nearly any of the tracking systems that enable all that creepy ad targeting. Not quite. My data collection is still running.

A little upsetting to me, and a vast departure from the usual advertising I get. Today I stood in a coffee line at a large medical center. A stranger struck up a conversation with me about her friend who was undergoing a pelvic reconstruction. To me, this feels suspicious at the most and creepy at the least. This has happened a few times to me. For instance, yesterday I watched the movie Titanic and last evening I was talking to my husband about taking a vacation.

We discussed one location that has a Titanic museum. Today on my Facebook page I am getting ads and stories about the Titanic. This is very disturbing and uncomfortable. I, too, have had many coincidental ads pop up but marked it off as "not likely listening".

I said "tardive dyskinesia" naming a diagnosis with symptoms of jerking limbs, a phrase that I had not uttered since learning about it in pathophysiology class years before. Guess what showed up on my Google ads the next day?

I think not. Ok having had a feeling for a while "something" was listening due to targeted ads IV not searched for and rarely use social media.. I tested it So in private convo at bottom of garden no phones etc we agreed 3 items to mention in a convo in our house that eve.. Lapland and to be out of current topics or near future events to eliminate coincidence Zebras giving birth That night I had dog suppliments oil and joint suppliments!!

How is this not proof they listen. Mentioned that the zipper on my wallet had broken. Next day, YouTube recommends a video on repairing broken zippers. Said it near the cellphone, which isn't a smart phone. Also nearby, newly-installed Spectrum digital receiver and shutdown Chromebook. Yes, I use Chrome. Figured everything's spying on me anyway, so whatever. But it's becoming increasingly creepier.

I talked to my daughter on my iPhone about pepper spray. The next day she got several ads about pepper spray, including her Groupon app. Neither one us had searched anywhere for it. What can I do about this?? My colleague went to Home Depot during lunch and left his phone on his desk.

While there, he browsed the selection of reciprocating saws. When he returned to the office, the first ad on his FB feed was for Mikita reciprocating saws - from Home Depot! I got rid of my Facebook for this reason but it's still happening more and more daily and it's really freaking me out!!! Oh my gosh - I too thought I was going crazy but this has happened a few times. The last one was this week, when I spoke to my husband over the phone and told him I had bad back pain due to my bad posture.

Guess what ad appeared on instagram the next day: a product to help me with my bad posture. Take All permissions away only allow when needed then take away again. I received a coded text message anonymously with direct quote of private face to face conversation from night before typed in. Cover your camera lights and turn off devices when not needed. Do not put even a turned off phone in the bedroom. Mine was off when that conversation would have been heard. I am not paranoid in the least. I am a realist! Ok So I can totally relate to what all you guys are saying because these related ads pop up all the time As I looked down at one of my daughters I just so happened to notice her hairband and think how pretty it looked on her.

I did not comment aloud, No speech. The next time I looked at my phone there was this advert doe all these pretty hairbands!!!!!! I was like now I am freaked Like WTF?! Is this really a coincidence My daughter asked to play a board game earlier, so I suggested chess. We played a game, and discussed moves, then went and had dinner. Half hour later I open youtube and the 2nd video on my home screen was chess!! No one in my house has searched or browsed anything to do with chess at any point recently, nothing to do with boardgames either. This seems a little too conicidental to me!

That "Safe Personal Alarm" ad that starts, "Six years after losing his daughter They're using a stock photo, and the FBI database has no missing child entry for "Christine Davidson". Google the company name and you'll find tons of complaints where the devices received don't work and the company won't accept returns.

Before that, a friend talked about her new eczema cream that she's using, and it popped up on my phone a day later. I am starting to believe the theory that our phones are listening, although I feel they always have been. It's only now that it's being revealed.
