Google Pixel 3 Review

Get filemanager Android app. It also retained more details with darker shadows than the Galaxy phones. There were times when the OnePlus 6T had a wider dynamic range than the Pixel 3 XL in its default mode, brightening and punching up colors more.
And while the 6T's Nightscape retained the same, if not slightly more, details than the Pixel 3 XL, the Pixel's Night Sight feature is far better at lighting up dim scenes. The Pixel 3's camera is skillful at taking portrait photos too.
They take a few seconds to render, but the falloff between the fore- and background looks natural and not overly smooth. When I took a photo of a dog, I noticed a patchy-looking stray hair or two, but the effect was minimal. And the Pixel gives you the option to tweak the blurriness and focus of these portraits after you fire the shutter, similar to the iPhone XS and other Android phones. The editing process is precise and easy to use.

Taking a photo in near darkness with the camera's default mode left and with Night Sight on right. Zooming in max at this building near Madison Square Park. The Pixel combines several photos together to process these detailed, zoomed-in shots. In this low-light image, the camera still captured details of people's faces and the bar in the back. The Pixel 3's expert handling of different lighting sources and exposures captured this vibrant shot. In this closeup shot taken outdoors, you can see how each phone captured its own great image, but all of them handled color differently.

It's glass — frosted to repel fingerprints and provide grip — and to support wireless charging. Why's there no face unlock? There's a USB-C port on the bottom and no headphone jack it's never coming back and you need to come to terms with it. Covering the front of the phones are OLED displays. The Pixel 3 has a 5. Both support HDR content. The screens look fantastic this time around. There's still a slight shift from a warmer color temperature when viewed dead-on compared to a blue-ish tint at an angle from the sides, but it's so subtle like on the iPhone XS that it's really a non-issue.
Everyone's least favorite thing about the 3 XL is of course its ginormous notch. It's deeper than any cutout we've seen on phones, but it's not without purpose. Same goes for the bezel or "chin" below the screens. I don't like a notch or chin bezel as much as the next guy, but if a phone's gonna have one, it might as well be meaningful. On the Pixel 3's they are. Hate it all you want, but the notch on the 3 XL allows the screen to stretch closer towards the top edge of the phone.
It also houses dual front-facing cameras and the receiver which doubles as a front-firing speaker. The bottom bezel on both phones contain another front-firing speaker. Other phones like the Huawei P20 Pro use this chin for a fingerprint sensor, but I'd much rather take a speaker. Even at the highest volume, the Pixel 3's produce some of the loudest and cleanest sound on a phone, which is something that other phones just don't have. If you're not in love with the notch on the 3 XL, there is an option to "turn it off" by essentially making the status bars on the left and right of it all black.
But at the time of this review, the setting to do so is hidden within the developer settings with no consumer-facing way to do so. Honestly, you won't even notice the notch after a few hours. Most apps have yet to be optimized to extend to the "horns" and the ones that do still use that space for the status bar.
The only time you might find the notch breaking the screen's immersion is when watching videos at full screen or playing optimized games. Needless to say, you can use them in the rain or drop them in the tub or toilet and they should work A-OK after drying out.
Why the Pixel 5 just got interesting
It's time — let's talk about the Pixel 3's cameras. Maybe grab some popcorn and break your magnifying glasses out because there are a lot of photo comparisons for you to scrutinize. To understand the Pixel 3's cameras we have to first know some details on the image sensors themselves and also how Google uses AI and machine learning to take the shots that they do. I promise you this will help you come to a decision on whether the cameras on the Pixel 3's really are the best on any phone.

Like with the hardware, the Pixel 3 and 3 XL come with identical On the front, there are two selfie cameras, each with 8-megapixels. The difference between the two cameras is their field of view. Judged purely on optics, these cameras are excellent on their own. However, Google's always fancied itself as a sorcerer with AI and machine learning used as its spells to enhance photos.
Google's already proven it's able to make a stellar camera do more i. Google dumped a dizzying number of new camera features on everyone at its Pixel 3 launch event. Features like "Top Shot," "Super Res Zoom," "Photobooth, "Night Sight" and "Motion Auto Focus" are hard to keep up with, so let's break them down and figure out of if any of them are really useful or if they're just gimmicks. First up is "Top Shot. Google made a big deal out of missing the shot. With Top Shot, if a shot doesn't come out just right because you didn't press the shutter button at the exact moment, you can scrub through a batch of alternate shots the camera took for you and find a better one.
A new "Top Shot" feature recommends better shots than the one you originally took. It sounds cool to use machine learning to recover a good shot, but in practice, the feature doesn't work always work. I have three complaints about Top Shot: 1 it's not obvious where to find Top Shots you swipe up from a photo from within the Google Photos apps 2 Top Shot is seemingly random and not every shot will have alternate shots, and 3 alternate shots have drastically reduced resolution With 0.
Though most people know it as being "useless 1.
