But, before we get too critical of the Honor 9X, it will be prudent to remember that at the end of the day, it is a budget segment smartphone that starts at Rs 13, and as such only promises enough when it comes to performance. Having said that, it should not be forgotten that at the price, the Honor 9X also faces competition from devices such as the Redmi Note 8 Pro and the Realme 5 Pro, both of which offer excellent performance at the price point. With the 9X, Honor has also attempted to aggressively target buyers looking for above par camera performance in the segment.

Does it manage to do so? Well, yes and no. During our time with the phone, we found pictures clicked using the primary lens come out with decent detail. This was especially true when the lens was fed with the just amount of natural light. Resultant shots were crisp, with accurate colours and good detail.

Moving to artificial light, Honor 9X managed to retain colour accuracy, but the lens lost a little in terms of detail it captured. The low light performance of the device is about average. While Honor does provide a software solution to improve this in the form of a dedicated night mode, the feature in itself is a little underwhelming in the results it offers, and especially the time it takes to click pictures using it. Interestingly, the front camera also offers support for software backed features, including Night Mode and Portrait shots. Both offer decent results when compared to the typical offerings that are available in the segment.

The Honor 9X will be the last such offering from Honor, for some time at least. Huawei has used the P-series to showcase its advancements in imagery.

The P40 Pro is also expected to do the same, but only this time, Huawei will have to rely on the hardware alone and hope that HMS ecosystem will not be much of a barrier in uptake. It was solely powered by HMS, but looked and felt the same as before. Icons, Settings and the likes were all the same. But instead of Google Playstore, there was the App Gallery. That could mean that the app store will dish out the apps you need over apps that are most downloaded.

In fact, if you go back to an older device from the Chinese giant, you will find most of the apps and services that Huawei offers as an alternative to Google suite of apps and services. HMS has been present in all Huawei and Honor devices, albeit in a restricted manner, launched in India. The situation is similar to most smartphones that are not Android One certified and use their own Android skin.

Under HMS, things like the setup process, encryption, cloud storage, and even ads will be tailored by Huawei. That could make the experience of using Huawei and Honor smartphones a little different from others, but largely, things should remain the same as before.
