It's not as good as a tablet or laptop, but it's far better than being stuck with only a phone. And if you're into games, the Dual Screen has something to offer, too. With some but, oddly, not all games that support physical game pads, you can use an LG game pad app on one screen to control a game running on the other. At times the V50 feels like two separate phones, side by side.

It's not quite as good as a physical, tactile game pad, but it does have some haptic feedback to partly make up for the loss of tactility and, again, it's a good deal better than nothing at all. There are some ways, however, in which this dual-display phone is every bit as stupid as it sounds. The case clicks open to only two screen positions, neither of which is much good.

The half-open position is too close to 90 degrees to use like a notebook PC — it could do with another 10 or 15 degrees so one screen is facing you when the phone is on your lap or on a desk — and the fully open position doesn't sit flat. It may seem to you like you've got a second phone taped to your first one, but boy oh boy that second phone is wobbly.

CHOICE verdict

Also, turning on the second screen absolutely kills the batteries. Obviously it depends on what you're doing with the phone, but with two screens in operation, you can see the battery drop by 20 per cent an hour or more.

If you're away from a charger, you'll need to use it sparingly. But you could say the same thing about smartphones in general, couldn't you? They're at their best when the screen is turned off and they're sitting in your pocket, untouched and unloved. LG V50 ThinQ

Is the LG V50 a taste of the future? Every year, consumers are treated to a whole heap of new phones tempting them to make the switch, to jump from whatever they own to something else. This year, those new gadgets are better than ever, sporting more features and cameras and slick designs amidst higher price tags.

But is there more to the LG V50 than just a dual screen accessory, and is that part even worth the upgrade at all?

LG's V50 ThinQ's dual screen makes it stand out, but like 5G it's not without its issues.

LG has been working on its G series for quite some time, and the V series for a little less, building the larger phone style out of what was once the Optimus G. Folks old enough to remember the Optimus might remember a glass body built to be slick, and when you pick up the LG V50, you quickly see the resemblance.

While the design has changed a little over time, the LG V50 5G ThinQ adopts a similar approach to the Optimus G, with a glass front, glass back, though with the camera flush against the body, something a little different from phones these days. The look of this mostly glass phone is definitely slick and schmick, even if the full glass body is a little played out and used by nearly every manufacturer. Underneath that slick 8. Cameras are also offered here, with two on the front and three on the back. These cameras are all flush with the body, meaning no bumps for the camera extrusion, and no extrusion at all.

There are even three buttons, similar to what Samsung tried in the Galaxy phones, with power on the right, volume on the left, and a Google Assistant button just beneath it. No Bixby here, folks. The battery in the LG V50 is rated at mAh and is not removable, though can be charged wirelessly. How often does that happen? Not very, we can tell you that. The front-facing camera is actually two, and means you can go from a standard view to something wider, making it similar to the Google Pixel 3 XL, and a handy way to capture a little more of yourself and friends.
