The dual lens set-up means that users can capture pictures of people, pets and objects in "Portrait mode" where the subject is in focus but the background is blurred. There's also a new Night mode, which automatically brightens images that are captured in indoor and outdoor low-light environments. This works alongside the wide and ultra wide cameras to take Potrait mode to the next level, according to Apple.

Both the dual and triple camera systems benefit from Smart HDR software, which uses machine learning to capture highlight and shadow detail on the subject and in the background. A new feature called QuickTake in the Camera app also allows users to record video without switching out of Photo mode by simply holding the shutter button to start recording. Apple said that all of its iPhone 11 devices will be updated with Apple's new image processing system called "Deep Fusion" technology later this autumn.

This "uses advanced machine learning to do pixel-by-pixel processing of photos, optimising for texture, details and noise in every part of the photo".

All of Apple's iPhone 11 models feature a new 12MP TrueDepth selfie camera, with a wider field of view to capture selfies, and next-generation Smart HDR for more natural-looking photos. The camera can record 4K video at up to 60 fps and fps slo-mo, so expect to see a lot of strange slow-motion selfie videos or "slofies" in you social media feeds next month. The chip is is built for machine learning, with a faster Neural Engine for real-time photo and video analysis, and is also efficient.

This includes a range of new features such as Dark Mode, a new way to sign into apps and websites called "Sign In with Apple", and a Google Street View-like Maps experience. There are also new photos and video edition tools, and a new Portrait Lighting effect called High-Key Mono, which creates a monochromatic look. All of the new iPhones feature "ultra wideband" technology, for more accurate indoor positioning.

Well, coming from the XR — which is still a great phone but more in line with this year's iPhone 11 in terms of positioning — the 11 Pro Max is noticeably bulkier and heavier. Not uncomfortably so, but you'll notice it's slightly heavier than last year's bigger brother and it's worth a play around in the shops to see if it's for you. And while the screen is really excellent, we still maintain that you won't really notice the difference between the 11 and the 11 Pros unless they're side by side, much like the XR and the XS.

That said, when you DO put them side by side, there's no contest — the 11 Pro Max's display is big, bold and dazzling with crisp detail. The iPhone 11 phones are a great package, and arguably the most consistent Apple smartphones so far. You'll be well happy with whichever one you pick up — but for those who like to have the biggest, best or just show off, the iPhone 11 Pro Max is primed for you.
