Are we really going to have to compute sensor size for phones using the pixel size and the MP number rather than the normal specs just listing it which seems like it would make a lot more sense to me. Also, pixel size is the important part and it is stated in the article. For the same sensor size, 5MP and 20MP would yield very different results, but when you know the pixel size, you know the story. The sensor size, or crop factor, is the important thing, in addition to the aperture which is also a useless number without knowing the cropfactor.

It tells us what we can expect in terms of noise and DoF. I really wish DPR would figure out the cropfactor so not everyone in the audience have to do that. And Gal, often it's not very simple to google it. Sometimes you'll have to find out which particular sensors are used for which cameras on the phone, and then find specs for those sensors and do calculations. These things are precisely what I need DPR for, not for just copy'n'pasting press releases.

While one can possibly find interchangeable use of standard and normal in English, in Russian it's definitely 'normal' referring to 50mm lens or perspective. So, 28mm equiv can be quite 'standard' while not being 'normal'. I do not take pictures with a phone, so I do not really care, but if the smartphone industry accepted 28mm-equivalent lens as a standard, I do not feel offended.

It's subjective. Call it ultra wide, wide and normal if it makes you more comfortable. It's a great setup, I wish this becomes a trend on all high-end phones in the future with maybe even longer telephoto focal length like 85mm. Samsung is about to release pretty identical configuration on the S10 so I guess it does become a trend. Good times for us. Haven't you noticed that Digital Photography is mostly done on smartphone nowaday?

I welcome the reviews. Actually except for restaurant selfies and in concerts I havne't seen anyone any where I go to do photography use a phone, they all had ILC cameras even the younger people. The rate how smartphones become sufficiently good enough for most folks, DPR indeed needs to transition and cover more smartphone camera news.

Actually the fact itself that you are considering to view a smartphone image on a high resolution 27" in full screen, should make you smile in admiration. They are amazing tools, and I use the camera to take document type shots, serial numbers for work and such but im not going to waste my time shooting RAW with my phone for a portrait or car race. Certain people are a little too excited about how great the photos are compared to DSLR.
